Hirens' Boot DVD 14.0 Restored Edition V 2.0

For installation to USB read file 'usb-installation'.

This CD includes all the utilities
found in Hiren's Boot CD 14.0 (May 2011) [1]
and it is Restored to contain all the commercial utilities
omitted from the official HBCD releases (since version 11.0.)
It also includes the Acronis True Image Home 2011 and other
useful software fully integrated within Hiren's menus.
For the complete list of utilities in the official Hiren's
Boot CD read the files HBCD.txt and changes.txt.

How to create a bootable usb from the files on the CD.

Linux Method
-------------------------------------------------------
1. Boot to Parted Magic Linux from the CD (5th option of the main menu).
2. Open a console window (LxTerminal).
3. Insert an at least 2Gb USB stick.
The total size needed is 1.6 Gb
The rest is available to store other files.

Note.
------------------------------------------------------------------
In the following commands replace the xx's with what is
appropriate for your USB stick. e.g. sdb1 or sdc1.
If you do not know them, find the correct device letters with:
fdisk -l or fsarchiver probe
*** Warning: If you get the xx's wrong you may hose a hard disk. ***
------------------------------------------------------------------
4. umount /dev/sdxx (In case the usb has been automounted)
5. mkfs.vfat -F32 -n HBCD /dev/sdxx (Format the stick)
6. mkdir /mnt/cdrom (Create a cd mountpoint)
7. mount /dev/sdxx /mnt/usb (Mount the stick)
8. mount /dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom (Mount the CDROM)
9. cp -Rfv /mnt/cdrom/* /mnt/usb/ (Copy files to the stick. Wait...)
10. syslinux -i -d isolinux /dev/sdxx (Install syslinux in the stick)

Note.

In the next two commands it must be a device sdb or sdc et.c.
*not* a partition sdb1 or sdc1 et.c

11. dd if=/usr/share/syslinux/mbr.bin of=/dev/sdx (Copy MBR to stick)
12. parted /dev/sdx set 1 boot on (Make sure the stick is active i.e. bootable)
13. sync (Flush any buffered data)
14. Reboot the computer and test the stick for booting.

Windows Method (NEW!!!)
-------------------------------------------------------
1. Boot HBCD, select "Mini Windows XP"
and connect a USB stick (2Gb or more)
2. Run USB Format Tool (HBCD Menu->Programs->Partition/Boot/MBR)
and format the stick.

3. Determine the letters of the CD and USB drives (Look in My Computer).
4. Copy all the files from CD to USB.
For this you may to use one of the utilities found
in the HBCD like FastCopy, TeraCopy or Total Commander
or the dos command: 'xcopy R:\*.* U:\ /E' (Where R is the CD drive
letter and U is the USB).
5. Download the bootloader installer syslinux (for windows) from Hirens page:
http://www.hiren.info/download/dos-files/syslinux.zip
and extract the executable 'syslinux.exe' somewhere (e.g. in B:\Temp\).
(Note: The rest of the contents of the archive are not needed.)
6. Open a command prompt, go to B:\Temp, and give the command:
syslinux.exe -imaf -d isolinux X:
where X is the letter of the USB stick.
7. Safely remove the stick and test for booting.

Note.

There is also the utility RMPepUSB (in Partition/Boot/MBR) which
in theory can format, copy the files, and install the bootloader
in one go - no need to download anything.
However it is unknown which version of syslinux installs
(we need > 4.0) and it is a rather awkward program to use.
